RESPONSIBILITY RUBRIC

Students must understand their role in the teaching/learning process and assume responsibility for those behaviors necessary for effective learning to take place.   The checklist below can also be used as a self-evaluation by students to improve their sense of responsibility.

  • Almost always
  • Rating falls between 3 and 5
  • Usually
  • Rating falls between 1 and 3
  • Often does not

Citizenship—Treat peers and staff with respect and concern.   Cooperates with peers and staff.
Preparation—Completes assignments on a timely basis.   Has book and needed materials as required.
Effort—Utilizes time and resources effectively.   Assumes responsibility for his/her own learning.

ALCOHOL AND DRUG POLICY

The possession and use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs is unlawful, harmful and wrong.   Therefore, mandatory disciplinary sanctions (consistent with local, state, and federal law), up to and including expulsion and referral for prosecution, will be imposed on students who violate these standards of conduct.

Any student possessing, distributing, or under the influence of illicit drugs, tobacco, or alcohol on school grounds or while attending any school activity as a participant or spectator, shall be subject to the following:

  1. First Offense:   Mandatory short term suspension of three to five days and a conference between the student, parent, principal, or assistant principal, and counselor.   At this conference, details of the infraction will be discussed, information about drug and alcohol counseling and tobacco cessation programs will be made available, and expectations for the student’s future will be outlined.
  2. Second Offense:   Mandatory long term suspension of six to nine days and until the student has enrolled in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program or tobacco cessation program.   Conference with student, student’s parent/guardian, principal or assistant principal, and school counselor prior to school re-entry.
  3. Third Offense:   Recommendation for expulsion from school.

ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES

Due to the potential disruptions to the educational purposes of school, cell phones, portable media players, and other electronic data and communication devices are to be turned off during class time.   Class time is defined as any time a student is scheduled for a class including study hall or anytime a student is in the media center.   Exceptions may only be granted by a school official.

Consequence:   Confiscation of the device until $20 is paid to the student activity account or until the last day of the current school year.   If the device is used for cheating or harassment, it will be returned only at the end of the school year and only to a parent or guardian.

SUSPENSION OR EXPULSION ON DAY OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Any student suspended or expelled from school on days of regularly scheduled school activities shall not be permitted to attend or represent Lakeview High School in these activities whether at home or away.

STUDENT DRESS

Students may wear clothing which does not interfere with the purpose of school or break one of our school rules.   Clothing which creates a distraction to staff or students or disrupts the learning process in any manner will not be allowed.   Any piece of clothing or any other item brought to school by a student should not contain any reference to violence, gang affiliation, profanity, sexual innuendoes, or promote the use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs in any manner.

  • Clothing or items that advertise violence in a promotional way.   Clothing identified by outside agencies (police and other law enforcement agencies) as gang-related apparel (i.e. sagging pants, long baggy coats, specific colors associated with a gang, do-rags worn on the head, hung from the wait, tied around the knee or arm, tied to a belt loop, etc; or colors, etc.).   Violence is defined as any mean word, look, sign, or act that hurts a person’s body, feeling, or things such as clothing that promote violence.
  • Clothing which is too light or too short, midriff top, or clothing that has holes in the hip, thigh, genital or upper chest areas, exposes or accentuates excessive cleavage, or unnecessarily shows off the of one of these areas (i.e., tank top with deep armholes, shirt unbuttoned to show sport bra underneath, etc.).   Such clothing violates our sexual harassment policy.
  • Clothing which contains profanity, derogatory reference or sexually suggestive language or pictures (i.e., Coed Naked shirts, Big Johnson shirts, Bear Whiz shirts, etc.).   Such clothing violates both our profanity rule and our sexual harassment policy.
  • Clothing which advertises drugs (defined in policy as alcoholic liquor, tobacco products, over-the-counter drugs, prescription drugs, controlled substances and substances purported to be drugs), or drug life-styles or features drug-related logos or drug paraphernalia (i.e., Marlboro or Winston clothing, Budweiser clothing or any clothing advertising breweries, pubs, etc.).   Such clothing violates our drug policy.
  • No undergarments are to be showing including bra straps.
  • Shorts are to be long enough to reach the students finger tips while the student is standing.
  • Shirts must be long enough that when arms are raised over the head, the midriff is not exposed.

Please keep this list in mind when you pick out the clothing you will buy for school or wear to school.

Students are not permitted to wear caps, hats, or bandannas, inside the building.   If we are going to respect others we must follow the rules of etiquette and show our respect by taking our hats off inside the building.   In addition, when hats are worn in the building they tend to become disruptions and distractions because students take them away from each other, lose them, etc.

Coats intended to be worn as outer wear may not be worn inside the classroom.

Students who dress inappropriately may be asked to change into clothing provided by the school, to put on other clothing which belongs to them, or call parents and ask them to deliver a new set of clothing to the school.

The administration reserved the right to determine appropriateness of student dress.   Students not meeting these standards may be sent home to dress appropriately before reentering school.

STUDENT DRIVING

Upon arrival at school, no student will be allowed to drive his/her car without permission until dismissal.   The maximum speed limit on school property is 10 MPH.   Any student speeding or driving recklessly in the parking lot may lose his/her privilege of using the school parking lot.   Repeated violations of the traffic laws of the State of Nebraska will be reported to law enforcement officials.   Students are not permitted to be in cars or the parking lot at any time during the school day unless coming to or leaving school.

STUDENT PARKING

There is no student parking on the south side of the school building or in the east stall of the west parking lot from the gym north.   Students are not to park in the driveway north of the parking lot and school.   This driveway is a fire lane so students will not be allowed to park there for school activities as well.   All students are required to park in designated stalls only.   Handicapped parking is reserved for handicapped individuals only.   There should be no student parking during the school day, on the gravel or grass areas west of the paved student parking lot.

PUBLIC DISPLAY OF AFFECTION

Public display of affection can be a distraction to the purpose of school.   In this light, hand holding is the limit.

INITIATION

Any Lakeview student hazing another student will not be tolerated and will be subject to suspension from school.   Any conduct which demeans or is humiliating to another constitutes hazing and will not be tolerated.   We are here to support each other, not to degrade and cause hardships between students.

HARASSMENT

No type of harassment will be tolerated.   This includes but is not limited to sexual harassment, bullying behavior, verbal or physical harassment.   Violators will be dealt with severely and promptly.
