COURSE DESCRIPTION:
English 9 is a continuation of the refinement of language skills --grammar, usage, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and literature. Students will learn library/research skills, as well as appropriate writing styles. Initial career exploration, resume development, group communication skills, and accessing information are components of the Business/English Curriculum Integration quarter.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
English 10 will stress many areas of study: vocabulary, reading comprehension, creative composition, essay writing (using the six traits model), classical literature, and grammar and punctuation. Study skills (test taking, note taking, library skills) will be integrated with the core class subject matter. Reading is stressed through the use of the Accelerated Reader progam. Grading will be determined on the basis of class participation, use of class time, homework, tests, quizzes, projects and daily preparation. Components of the Business/English Curriculum Integration quarter are: resume update, workplace communication, and consumer awareness.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
English 11 is designed for both the college-bound and vocational student. The course emphasizes American literature. Also stressed are composition (using the Six Traits writing model), grammar, usage, and vocabulary. Reading is accentuated through the Accelerated Reader program. Grading will be determined on the basis of class discussion, writing, homework, tests, quizzes, projects, and daily preparation. Creating an application letter, analyzing financial data, retrieving and processing information, using correct business etiquette and ethics are components of the Business/English Curriculum Integration quarter.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed both for the college-bound and vocational student. Emphasis throughout the year will be on writing skills with specific instruction in the six Traits of Writing. Literature studied in class will include Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Night by Elie Wiesel, and In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. Students will also work to improve reading skills through independent reading of Accelerated Reader books. A Holocaust unit will be taught, with emphasis on film study and writing. A research paper during fourth quarter will be required. Finally, during fourth quarter BECI (Business/English Curriculum Integration), students will update a resume, complete a mock interview, compose business letters, and establish budgets.

This oral communication class will broaden the student's speaking and listening skills so he/she can understand and accept his/her responsibilities in this fast moving, media-centered world. Students will write and will deliver a variety of speeches including: personal, informative, demonstrative, persuasive, entertaining, eulogy, impromptu, and multicultural.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Advanced speech is a class for those who are interested in speech competitions. Students will study and will perform the nine Nebraska Activities Association events: humorous prose, serious prose, extemporaneous, informative, poetry, persuasive, entertaining, duet, and drama. In addition, students will study acting techniques, will learn how to find strong speech topics and selections, will practice critiquing methods, and will learn how to cut materials.

Journalism is a study of various news writing and reporting methods. The class will publish eight (8) issues of the "Viking Viewpoint" along with creative writing, use of technology, and a photo portfolio.
